The Hidden Cost of Overparenting

Overparenting is a serious problem because it can make children too dependent on their parents. Many parents try to give their children every comfort and fulfil all their wishes because they do not want to see them unhappy. Their intentions are usually good, but too much protection and comfort can stop children from learning responsibility, independence, and self-control.

However, good intentions do not always lead to good results. When parents do everything for their children, children may lose the chance to solve problems on their own. They may also begin to believe that money, comfort, and protection will always be available, even when they become adults.

Parents naturally want the best for their children. They monitor their children’s activities, protect them from danger, and try to guide them toward a better future. Many parents also hope their children will achieve things that they themselves could not achieve. This love is valuable, but it must be balanced with discipline and independence.

One of my friends once told me that if a child is responsible, hardworking, and focused on studies, parents do not need to do everything for that child. Such a child can follow a goal, make good decisions, and move forward with only proper guidance. On the other hand, if a child is careless, dishonest, and not interested in studies, too much comfort can make the situation worse. The child may think, “My parents have enough money and property, so I do not need to work hard.” Instead of building a future, the child may spend money carelessly with friends and waste time on unnecessary activities.

For example, one old man saved money for his two children because he wanted them to have successful careers and a better future. He gave them good food, a comfortable home, and a good education. He sacrificed and compromised a lot for them. Sometimes he even stayed hungry, but he still wanted his children to reach a good position in life. His mistake was not loving them too much; his mistake was doing almost everything for them without teaching them enough responsibility, gratitude, and care for others.

After a few years, one child became an officer and earned a good salary. The other child was lazy and depended on his father’s money. Later, with his father’s help and guidance, he started a business and also became successful. However, their success did not mean they had truly learned the value of sacrifice. They had received comfort, support, and money, but they had not fully learned how to give care back to the person who had helped them most.

Sadly, they repeated the same pattern with their own children. They gave too much comfort, spent a lot of money on education and health, and tried to save more money so that their children could become successful. In this way, the cycle continued: each generation focused on giving material comfort, but not enough attention was given to teaching gratitude, emotional responsibility, and family duty. Because of this, everyone slowly forgot about the old man who had sacrificed so much for them. He waited for his children, but no one returned to care for him. In the end, he was left alone later in life.

Therefore, I believe that overparenting, over-caring, and giving too much comfort can be harmful to children. After a certain age, parents should allow children to manage some parts of life by themselves. This helps them learn time management, saving money, decision-making, problem-solving, and how to deal with difficult people. When children face challenges and overcome them through their own efforts, they feel more confident and grateful. Parents should guide their children with love, but they should also give them enough freedom to become responsible and independent.
