Have you ever stopped to think about what your social media posts offer other people? When I bought a new mobile phone, I began thinking about how the way we use technology reflects our values. The phone was not very expensive, but its useful features showed me that a mobile device could do more than entertain me. It could help me organize my life, share practical ideas, and connect with others in positive ways.
During a conversation, one of my friends asked, “What do you like to do with your phone?”
I replied, “I use it for many practical things. I make to-do lists in Notes so that I do not forget important tasks. I also organize my priorities, browse the internet, and take pictures of beautiful scenery etc.”
He then asked, “Do you take pictures of food and post them on Facebook?”
I smiled and said, “Not very often. When the food is delicious, I am usually too busy enjoying it to remember to take a picture! If I do take one, I keep it as a reminder to order the dish again or try making it at home. And if it is especially good, I recommend it to my friends so that they can try it too.”
That conversation made me think more carefully about what we choose to share online. I am not particularly interested in posting food photos simply to attract attention, because a picture of a meal does not always offer something useful to the reader. People have different circumstances, needs, and dietary restrictions. Some may have limited access to nutritious food, while others may be unable to eat certain dishes because of chronic illnesses or other health conditions.
For these reasons, I prefer to share recipes rather than pictures of food. A recipe gives people something practical: they can prepare the dish in their free time, adapt it to their needs, and enjoy it for themselves.
I believe social media is most valuable when we use it thoughtfully. Instead of sharing content only to attract attention, we can exchange practical knowledge, encourage others, and add something positive to their lives. Even a simple recipe, helpful idea, or kind message can make someone’s day a little better.
What useful or positive message would you like to share online?
